July or August: Shrubs & Perennials To Be Pruned

Shrubs that have already bloomed should be pruned in July or August.

Do not wait until Fall to take care of these types of shrubs and perennials.

Shrubs to prune in the Summer include:

1. Forsythia (Forsythia intermedia)
2. Azalea (Azalea tsutsuji or Azalea pentanthera)
3. Lilac (Syringa Vulgaris)
4. Yellow Twig and Red Twig Dogwoods (Cornus sericea)
5. Viburnums (Adoxaceae)
6. John’s Wort (Hypericum prforatum)
7. Mock Orange (Philadelphus coronaries)
8. Deutzia (Deutzia gracilis)
9. Weigela (Weigela variegata)
10. Japanese Kerria (Kerria japonica)

Perennials to prune in the Summer include:

1. Garden Phlox (Phlox paniculate)
2. Culver’s Root (Veronicastrum)
3. Balloon Flower (Platycodon)
4. Yarrow (Achillea)
5. Catmint (Nepeta)
6. Bee Balm (Monarda)
7. Tall Coneflower (Rudbeckia Herbstonne)
8. Monkshood (Aconitum)
9. Boltonia (Boltonia asteroids)
10. Russian Sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia)
